Penpals

This term we are writing to our penpals at Anderson's Bay School in Dunedin. We have sent one letter to each other and told each other about our schools and families. We can't wait to hear back!
Look at our beautiful letters!

Static Electricity

How Lightning FormsWe have been reading a book about storms and lightening. Lightening is like electricity. When warm air rises and mixes with the water vapour in the air it makes clouds. When it is really cold it turns into ice. The ice is bumping around building up like static electricity to cause lightening.

We looked at how we could make our own static electricity by making positive and negative charges like the air using a balloon. We blew up balloons and rubbed them against our jumpers and the carpet. We then put the balloons by our heads and watched our hair stand up and touch the balloon. We even did it to Miss Zeier's hair!

William Tell

80 paces away from the hall and Katelyn
Today during reading we read a story about a man called William Tell who lived in Switzerland about seven hundred years ago. He had practised shooting wolves in the forests around his mountain home. One day him and his son went to go see foreign soldiers. The people of Switzerland hated them. Then a man came out and said ''I know him he can shoot an apple from eighty paces". They wanted him to shoot an apple off his sons head.

After we had learnt about William Tell we went outside and got an apple and started walking eighty paces then Miss Zeier said to stay there with the apple on my head and they'll go and do eighty paces. When they did it they went from the end of the field all the way to the court. Then Miss Zeier took a picture of me then I started laughing.

Customs Dog Visit

On Wednesday two men that work at the airport came to visit Dawson School. Gareth & Brad came to talk to us about their jobs as customs officers and Brad’s dog Waldo. Waldo checks to see that people aren’t carrying drugs. We learnt heaps of cool information about customs dogs.

All the teachers had to line up with Eric and Faalili and Waldo had to find the  fake drugs that one of them had. It was Mrs Brass! They tried to trick Waldo by swapping places but he was too smart. We had so much fun!

Science

On Friday the 12th of April Room 12 did a science experiment with the M&M's. We were talking about what would happen when we put the M&M's in the bowl with the water. Then some people said if you put different colours in the bowl the colours would mix together and make another colour. After that we tried it out and the colours didn't mix because when the colours met they stopped and didn't go any further.

After that we thought that we could make a pattern with red and blue and a green M&M in the middle. After that we did one with three colour's on one side and one on the other. Next we were watching the colours spread out while I was taking a video. By Katelyn

Cricket

On Friday Room 12 played cricket. The cricket man introduced himself, his name was Kurt. We had to split up into groups of 6. Foxx was the first person to bat and do you know what? He hit it so hard that it went all the way down to the fence. Then Kurt put three balls on the cone and we had to hit all three balls and hit the wicket to get points. After that my group had to field and we had the lowest amount of points and we said to the other team well done. Kurt said well done Room 12 and he said we played cricket really well. Then Room 12 went back to class and did fun activities. What awesome fun room 12 had.

Devonport Trip

On Thursday the 14th of March Rooms 11,12 and 13 went to Devonport. When we were going to Devonport we had a very long bus ride to the ferry. After the bus ride we got on the ferry. While we were on the ferry we took some wonderful photos. We went through some very dark tunnels. We used torches to help us. Some people were really scared but not me! Then we found a really nice hill that we could slide on. All of the classes used card board to slide down the hill. After a really long trip we went back on the ferry and back on the bus while we were on the bus some children were sleeping because they had a good trip and were very tired.
