HOWICK HISTORICAL VILLAGE

Hi my name is Maria and today I will be talking about my extension trip to Howick Historical Village. We had two teachers supervising us. Their names were Mrs Ellis and Mrs Rolle. Before we left we went to the staff room. But when we got to the staff room we had to leave because our taxi's were here. So then we had to walk back out of the office and walk to our taxi's. After that we were separated so Room 12 was in one taxi and Room 11 inside the other one. But we had a girl from Room 15 and her name is Daisy. While we were sitting in the bus some people were screaming and playing around while some other people were just sitting there quietly waiting. Then the driver said ''lets go''so then we put our seat belts on and then we went. So when we got there we got out of the bus and waited for 20 minutes because we were to early. After 20 minutes we met a lady called Mrs Hill and she introduced us to another lady called Mrs Hallim. She was the school teacher at Howick Historical Village. When we met Mrs Hallim we we went into the school room to learn how to write with stone on stone. Mrs Ellis and Mrs Rolle had a competition to see who can do the neatest writing and  Mrs Rolle won so poor Mrs Ellis. I had an awesome time!

FIREWORKS

Fireworks are cool but dangerous. They are colourful like a rainbow. Fireworks go high in the dark sky. They are loud like a shotgun. The smoke smells like burnt food. Fireworks stay in one place when it shoots, then it spreads around in the dark sky. Fireworks are fast like a tiger. Fireworks are sparkly when they are in the sky.
FIREWORKS 2015
Some people celebrate Guy Fawkes Day because there was a man named Guy Fawkes.
There are different kinds of fireworks like...
Roman candles
The demolition box
The big boom box
and lots of other fireworks.

Tyrannosaurus Rex

A tyranosaurus rex is called a t-rex. Did you know that Tyrannosaurus Rex means king?

A t-rex could hunt his prey. He ate meat. A meat eater is a carnivore. Everybody is scared of a t-rex.

Now t-rex are only in museums because they died.

A t-rex had 2 little arms, it was big and tall and lots of sharp teeth.

It is my favourite dinosaur because it was better than the other dinosaurs.

Pandas

Pandas are very soft like a blanket. Pandas are slow like a snail, slug and turtle. They eat bamboo all day until they are tired and then they go to sleep.  When they are tired they lie down in the snow and have a good sleep. Pandas have a thick fur coat to keep them warm. They take care of their babies well. Pandas live in China in the mountains covered with bamboo forests. When other animals or pandas come close they do a big growl to make them go away.

Pandas have sharp nails. They are black and white. They are not like other bears. Pandas are very good at hiding in the snow because they are black and white.

Some people lock pandas in cages and put a collar around their neck. They set them free so they will always know where they are. Some pandas are in the zoo. They have made movies about pandas like Kung Fu Panda.

People are not allowed to kill pandas anymore. We like that pandas are soft and cuddly like a lions mane and that their teeth look like vampires teeth cause they are sharp and pointy.

Room 12s trip to the Auckland Zoo

On Monday the 24th of August we went to the Auckland Zoo. The animals that I liked the best were the kiwis and the eels. The kiwis were playing around and running around it was like they were playing tag and you can't catch me. The eels were freaky but they were still cool as well.  Next time I go to the Auckland Zoo I will see all of the animals next time because we didn't get to see them all. We saw the two elephants walking, their names are Anjalee and Burma. It was there birthday and we said happy birthday to both of them. They were very big.

Our Visitor

Today Room 12 and Room 11 met this police lady in our school kitchen. She was telling us about finger prints and showed us how we could lift them off of cups and windows.

The police lady told our teachers to find a
volunteer to come up so she can show us the finger print that the volunteer has placed on the cup.

Everyone has different fingerprints. Did you know that when a baby is growing in it's mum's belly it gets fingerprints at 3 months?

Leeches

Leeches are creepy blood suckers they suck blood from animals and people. It has two suckers, there is one behind and one in the front. So if it is stuck on someone or some animal it can suck your blood. A leech can even drink blood bigger than its body.

Oil and Water

Oil spills into the water and when oil hits water animals under the sea are in danger. Oil can be caused by a tanker full of oil smashing into a ship.

The oil can kill seals by poisoning their food. Oil can kill dolphins by blocking their blow holes, this makes it hard for the dolphins to get air above the water so they can breathe under water. Oil can kill birds too, if oil hits the birds feathers the bird will fall and be freezing cold on the floor.

HOLIDAYS

Hi my name is Elizabeth and I would like to talk about Halloween in America.

The different thing about America and New Zealand is that America is bigger than New Zealand. When you are celebrating Halloween here in New Zealand you do not get as much candy as in America. In America you carve your own pumpkins and they have very big, humongous pumpkins. When you are in New Zealand you never get big, humongous pumpkins like America.

When America is celebrating Halloween they also have big parties with family or with work.

When you are in New Zealand we don't have that many parties for Halloween. Sometimes if you have parties some people do not turn up or they would be sick and that is what makes the parties boring.

Vampire Bats

Vampire bats are one of the grossest animals in the world, they are just like vampires. They can suck peoples blood and other animals. It comes out at night but it sleeps in the day. At night is when they land next to a sleeping animal then they bite it  then they suck there blood like in the picture. Gross!!!

A Vampire Bat looks sort of like a pig with large fangs and pointy ears. A Vampire Bat is about 3 inches long and has a wingspan of about 8 inches. Its fur is a dark-grey brown. It has two sharp pointy teeth and walks using its strong back legs. A Vampire Bat likes tropical places.

Moving Through The Air

Hi my name is Maria and today I will be talking about moving through the air. Many different types of birds fly. Birds can fly by using the muscles in there wings.

Some other animals also move through the air like bats and the sugar glider. The way bats fly with their wings that are made out of thick skin. The other animal I wanted to talk about is the sugar glider. The only thing birds and the sugar glider don't have in common is that the sugar glider does not fly.

Electricity is for powering our homes around the world. We use electricity power stations so that we have enough power for our homes. Electricity is from fossil fuels and nuclear power stations. You can also get it from wind, water, oil and the sun.

Awapalema

In room 12 we have groups for reading. The Giraffe group read  a book called Awumpalema. In the story there was a magic tree that when you say its name food will drop down from the tree. The animals needed to say the magic trees name but they kept on forgetting it.

The tortoise went and asked the mountain spirit to say the magic word one more time.
The tortoise kept on saying the magic word when all of a sudden the tree let all the food down and water came out for the animals to drink. They lived happily ever after.

If I had a magic food tree I would want it to drop...
Raiha -  cake and strawberries with chocolate but not peanut butter and marmite
Suzy - Fresh fruit but not jam
Alekisio - snickers bars but not cake or pumpkin

Thanks-Giving Day

Canada's first thanksgiving was in 1617 and carried on for centuries. The United States first Thanksgiving was in 1619 and is still on today. First the families pray to God or Jesus for a few seconds or they talk about all that they are thankful for in their lives. Then they eat turkey and spend time together. The United States Thanksgiving is on the fourth of  November  and Canada is on the second of October.

Descriptive Writing Practise

We were practising how to describe something. What do you think of the story we made up about kiwis?

The NZ Kiwi

Kiwis have dark brown fur.
They have two little beady black eyes.
The kiwi has a long pointy beak like Pinocchio.
Its small furry wings sit right beneath their necks.
They have little wings like little baby chickens.
No matter how hard they flap their wings they can't fly!
